HYPERBARIC TECHNOLOGIST

1. GENERAL A.     Should assume responsibility for the safe and effective operation and maintenance of the hyperbaric chamber(s) and related systems and ancillary components. B.     Must work closely with the Safety Coordinator, facility management personnel, and medical personnel. C.     Reports to the Nurse Practitioner or Physician in-charge. D.     Performs duties under the indirect supervision of the Safety Coordinator. E.     Is responsible for the day-to-day maintenance on the hyperbaric chamber(s) and related support systems. F.     Supervises each HBO treatment or ensures that treatments are supervised only by qualified staff that has been trained in hyperbaric medicine. G.     Provides all patient education and patient care in the HBO Unit. 2.   KNOWLEDGE & EXPERIENCE A.     Hyperbaric Technologist – Preferred B.     Allied Health professional – Required 3.   JOB RESPONSIBILITIES A.     Assists in patient preparation for treatment. B.     Performs patient assessments in coordination with the Nurse Practitioner or Physician. C.     Keeps complete and accurate patient records as they pertain to treatment documentation. D.     Performs duties and procedures as directed by the Safety Coordinator and the Physician. E.     Performs hyperbaric chamber operations and system maintenance as required. F.     Maintains competencies, continuing education, and certifications as appropriate. G.     Ensures department compliance with NFPA 99, Hyperbaric Facilities, and with unit safety policies and procedures. H.    Ensures department compliance with JCAHO, Department of Health, and UHMS accreditation standards. I.       Ensures that all facility bills are properly coded and submitted and that each treatment is tracked and reported to the Physician or Nurse Practitioner. J.       Ensures that Physicians sign all required documents. K.     Fosters a positive relationship between the department and the local Fire Marshall, Emergency Medical Services Director, and Pressure Vessel Inspector, as appropriate. L.     Evaluates hyperbaric chamber equipment/supplies used in the chamber and ensures that they meet all safety requirements before they are permitted inside the chamber. M.    Maintains a safe environment in the hyperbaric facility for patients and staff and uses approved and recognized monoplace treatment protocols. N.    Informs personnel of any special work conditions such as infection control, hazard control, and confined spaces.
